The telecommunications industry boomed in the 1980s giving birth to the 1G in 1980s thereafter 2G was introduced in 1993, 3G in 2001, 4G in 2009 and finally 5G will be introduced in 2020. It can be seen that every next 10 years a new mobile technology is invented which is faster and powerful than previous. So the latest technology 5G is the next generation of telecommunication technology and it is far more advanced than the current 4G technology. But what is the actual difference between 5G vs 4G?

What is 5G?

It is a telecommunication term used to describe the next generation of mobile networks beyond 4G LTE. International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-2020 is the standard of 5G that will be released by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). 5G is developed upon the existing LTE technology. The Reason why the definition is still unclear that it depends upon how 5G will be architected and deployed will depend upon how the network is used. Like it can be used in IoT and it can also be used for video streaming etc.

What is 4G?

4G also referred to as “Fourth Generation” which provides ultra-broadband access for mobile devices and follows the standard set by the International Telecommunications Union-Radio (IMT-R). These standards are-

a.) It should use Internet Protocol (IP) packet switching instead of circuit switching,

b.) It should jump across different networks without loss of data and provide high-quality service.

5G technology can be interconnected with different systems to support a wide range of applications such as WiFi, mobile internet, IoT and many more applications. 5G can be integrated with the existing RATs (e.g. GSM, HSPA, LTE, and WiFi) with the new Mm Wave bands.
Mm Wave bands have plenty of available spectrum bands, reduce antenna sizes and fabricate array antennas with thousands of smaller antenna elements. The Mm Wave technology will also allow back haul links to carry the traffic from the relay stations which will provide further flexibility to the operators compared to wired fiber optic cables.

It is further believed that 5G UE (User Equipment) will become intelligent and perform the task like autonomously connect to the suitable network based on the proper channel quality. This smart 5G UEs will support the 3D media with speed up to 10Gbps.

What is 4G architecture?

Evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN):
The radio communication between User Equipment and EPC is controlled by E-UTRAN. The operations performed by are:
1.) Analog and digital processing of LTE interfaces to transmit and receive radio transmission to all LTE devices,

2.) Performs operations like signaling messages.
4G architecture is a mixture of various heterogeneous wireless access networks such as cellular, hotspot and satellite systems.
4G supports Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO)IPv6VoIP etc.
Smart antennas are for transmitting and receiving signals and reduces the need for increased power and additional frequency
IPV6: IPV6 technology is used to support various wireless devices at the same time and it can optimize security and route capabilities.
VoIP: It stands for Voice over IP, it allows to transfer only 1 packet to transfer eliminating the complexity of 2 protocols over the same circuit.
Evolved Packet Core (EPC): It communicates with internal and external packet data networks. It consists of components like:
HSS: Home Subscriber Server is a central database where all the network operator’s subscriber’s information is stored.
MME: Mobility Management Entity is used to handle the high-level operation of signaling messages.
S-GW: Signaling Gateway forwards data between PDN Gateway and Base station
P-GW: Packet Data Network Gateway communicates with the employing interfaces performs operations like packet filtering and IP address allocation.
PCRF: Policy and Charging Rule Function controls the flow-based charging operations in Policy Control Enforcement Function.

3.) Speed:

Download Speeds

5G speed is 100 times faster than 4G. To put that into perspective to download a 2hr movie on 3G it will take 26hrs, on 4G it will take 6 minutes and on 5G it will be just 3.6 seconds
With faster-downloaded speed means the response time will increase. 4G has a response time of 45ms while 5G will have a response time of just 1ms. This feature will be very useful in its various applications such as self-driving, gaming, 4K movies etc.
In this year’s Mobile World Congress, Samsung showcased their 5G enabled home routers, which were operating on 4 gigabits-per-second. That is 500mbps, which can download a 100GB game in under 4 minutes

But there was a kick in this setup. The 5G router was set up next to where the demonstration was showcased. This means there were no obstacles or network congestion which is an ideal situation for sending and receiving signals. Though best part is that 5G networks won’t require to dig up and lay down millions of miles of fiber optic cables. The signal can be transmitted wirelessly through the air just like how normal mobile networks work.

6.) 5G challenges

Every next technology is better than the previous one. Hence to overcome the limitations of 4G, 5G will be introduced. But as the saying goes nothing is perfect not even technology, hence this are 4 most important challenges faced by 5G

     a.) Security and Data threat

User equipment like smartphones, tablet, and laptop are a very important part of our daily life. Hence these devices are prone to more sophisticated attacks which will be targeted to the devices and 5G cellular network. It is believed that mobile botnets will be used for the attacks because mobiles will be like a remote control for various devices. It will require the mobile phone to be always connected to the internet and hence it will be easy for future hackers to hack into your smartphone and steal data.

     b.) Deployment of 5G architecture

According to Bloomberg report, it will cost around $200 to chip makers, software developers, device manufacturers a year in research and capital spending to get to that point. Several air interfaces will coexist at the same time which means it will be an expensive development cost and difficult in deployment efforts. For faster connections and low latency time, it will be required to set-up the infrastructure and locate the server close to the user. Hence it is not a feasible business model since it will take less time to attract customers in the initial stages. 

     c.) Huge data volumes

The amount of data being carried on mobile networks is increasing 25-50% a year and it is expected to rise till 2030. Hence the data capacity in the end to end networks should increase in order to let the systems interact with each other.

     d.) IoT, Self-driving cars, AR etc…

 These systems will be sending and receiving data hence they will require more volume of data for the more physical number of connections. Hence a faster network with low latency is required for overall round-trip time.

5G release date:

The 5G release date hasn’t been confirmed yet and for every country it is different but most of the countries will roll out 5G in 2020.
